Camp update

August 01, 1998|By Gary Lambrecht

Change of heart: One day after criticizing the team for a poor morning workout, coach Ted Marchibroda praised the Ravens for a good day's work and ended yesterday afternoon's practice 30 minutes early.

Starks watch: Rookie cornerback Duane Starks' holdout dragged into its 11th day. The only good sign is that the Ravens and agent Drew Rosenhaus resumed negotiations yesterday.

More injuries: Tight end Eric Green missed his first day of practice with a sore knee. Fullback Roosevelt Potts sat out for the third day with a sore knee, but is expected back today. Cornerback Alfred Jackson returned to practice Thursday night, but sat out yesterday with a tender hamstring. Cornerback Donny Brady (knee) could return in about a week. Rookie receiver Pat Johnson pulled up with a sore foot in the morning, but practiced in the afternoon after X-rays were negative. Defensive end Rob Burnett (bronchitis) could return today. Offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden pulled out of the afternoon practice with a thumb injury.

First time for everything: Until this week, tight end Brian Kinchen, out for six weeks following surgery to repair a torn thumb tendon, had never missed a practice during his 10-year career.

Are we comfortable?: Cornerback Rod Woodson drew some ribbing from teammates and strength coach Jerry Simmons during team calisthenics yesterday morning. With the field still soggy from the previous night's heavy rain, Woodson requested a towel to sit on while he stretched -- the only player to do so.

Drops, drops, more drops: The receivers had an up-and-down day, and the trouble even spread to the defense, where Woodson dropped his first interception of camp.

Quote: "I'm all ears out there with that guy. What am I going to say to a guy like Rod Woodson, other than: 'Are you having a good day?' "
