National Stock Car Commission: Upheld NASCAR's 4-race suspension and season-long probation on Busch Series driver Jeff Purvis and increased fine against him from $5,000 to $10,000 for altercation during race July 25. Reduced fine against Purvis crew chief Johnny Allen from $1,500 to $250 and reduced season-long probation to two weeks for same offense.

Baseball

National Baseball Hall of Fame: Named former Oriole Frank Robinson, Paul Beeston, Bill DeWitt and George Steinbrenner board members.

Angels: Purchased contract of IF Troy Glaus from Triple-A Vancouver. Optioned P Jarrod Washburn to Vancouver. Transferred P Mike James and 1B Todd Greene to 60-day DL.

Athletics: Activated 2B Scott Spiezio from 15-day DL. Sent former Orioles OF Jack Voigt to Triple-A Edmonton.

Braves: Traded P David Cortes and P Mike Porzio to Rockies for 1B Greg Colbrunn.

Cubs: Optioned P Rod Myers to Triple-A Iowa. Transferred P Jeremi Gonzalez from 15-day to 60-day DL.

Diamondbacks: Activated P Felix Rodriguez from 15-day DL. Optioned P Bob Wolcott to Triple-A Tucson.

Reds: Placed OF Mike Frank (bruised left rib cage) on 15-day DL, retroactive to July 27. Recalled IF Aaron Boone from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Red Sox: Promoted Ed Kenney to assistant GM, Kent Qualls to director of minor-league operations and Buddy Bailey to minor-league field coordinator.

Rockies: Purchased contract of IF Terry Shumpert from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

White Sox: Purchased contract of P Chad Bradford from Triple-A Calgary.

College

NCAA: Placed Gonzaga on four years' probation because former AD Dan Fitzgerald improperly deposited university funds in private fund over which he had sole control.

Humanitarian Bowl: Announced two-year agreement between Big West and Conference USA to provided teams for game in 1998 and 1999.

Boston College: Basketball C Kostas Maglos will skip senior year and play for Panathinaikos A.O. in Greece after getting 3-year, $1.35 million deal.

Furman: Junior men's basketball F Patrick Garner is joining football team as tight end.

Dolphins: Waived WR Terry Guess.

Hockey

Lightning: Signed C Jesse Belanger. Re-signed RW Corey Spring.

Soccer

L St. Louis (NPSL): Named Joe Scrivner director of operations.
