Various local organizations, such as hospitals and the Red Cross, offer baby-sitting courses. Here's a sample of what's offered:

American Red Cross: Teaches basics such as how to deal with emergencies, hold a baby, play with toys. For ages 11-15. Class runs 8 1/2 hours, split over two days. Held monthly; next open session is Sept. 12 and Sept. 19. Cost: $35. Held at Towson Presbyterian Church, 400 W. Chesapeake Ave. Call: (410) 764-7000, ext. 7120.

University of Maryland Cooperative Extension Services/4-H Club: Teaches basics and safety in choosing clients. For ages 12-15. ++ Runs six hours, in one, two or three sessions. The baby-sitting class goes to public libraries, churches and public schools. Free. Call: (410) 396-4906.
