Man hurt seriously in crash on tractor

July 29, 1998

A Reisterstown man who was seriously injured while mowing grass at River Downs in Finksburg on Monday remained in critical condition yesterday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Jeffrey J. Oyan, 20, of the 3400 block of Winterberry Road is employed by the River Downs Association. He was operating a lawn tractor about noon when, according to state police, he apparently shifted the 84-inch mower's transmission to neutral to gain more speed as he traveled downhill on the edge of Lawndale Road.

Police said the mower went out of control, overturned and struck a bridge after its wheels ran into a washed-out area.

Investigators said the mower's transmission was in working order. They said another employee told them that workers sometimes shift the mower's transmission out of gear because "you can walk faster than the mower, when it's in gear."

Westminster: Firefighters responded at 11: 58 a.m. Monday to investigate an unknown problem in the 400 block of Malcolm Drive. Units were out 16 minutes.
