Quote: "There is a guy with a 7.00 ERA and for seven innings makes us look like a bunch of Little Leaguers." -- Reds manager Jack McKeon after the Rockies' Pedro Astacio shut out his team for seven innings last night and dropped his ERA to 6.16.

It's a fact: The Giants doubled their normal attendance in the two-game series with the Cardinals and Mark McGwire. Averaging 21,961 per game coming into the series, they drew 40,147 on Wednesday night and 46,393 yesterday.

Who's hot: The Padres' Trevor Hoffman earned his 32nd save of the season and 40th straight since last season, tying Dennis Eckersley (1991-92) for the second longest streak ever and moving him within one of the mark of 41 set by San Francisco's Rod Beck (1993-95).

Who's not: The Giants have lost 11 of 13 games since the All-Star break.

On deck: Cardinals left-hander Donovan Osborne made his second rehabilitation start for Double-A Arkansas on Wednesday night, allowing one hit and striking out five in three scoreless innings and may return soon to the majors.
