Warfield Complex hearing scheduled

July 24, 1998

Sykesville has scheduled a Sept. 21 public hearing on the annexation of state property, formerly part of Springfield Hospital Center.

During the next 60 days, the county planning department will review the proposal to annex the Warfield Complex, which includes 138 acres and 15 aging buildings.

"State law requires that the county look at the annexation to make sure it is in keeping with its master plan," said Matthew H. Candland, town manager.

The County Commissioners received a new survey of the property Wednesday, plus copies of the town's annexation proposal and technical information. The annexation proposal won state approval last year.

As it works to redevelop the site along Route 32, the town also will seek a zoning waiver for the property, now part of the agriculture zone.

"We have no zoning designation to put on it right now," Candland said. "It will probably carry an employment campus zone."
