Renee Hatcher, from Huntingtown, and Breton Bay Country Club, won the medal with a 4-over-par 38-39--77, as qualifying for the annual amateur championship of the Maryland State Golf Association Women's Division was held at Woodholme Country Club yesterday.

Defending champion Mallory Crosland of the Chevy Chase Club was an automatic qualifier.

Leland Beckel, from Columbia CC, and Leigh Farrell, of the CC of Maryland, each had 78, and were the only other ones in a field of 76 to break 80 on a hot, humid day at the well-conditioned but demanding 5,744-yard Pikesville course.

Hatcher, seeing the course for the first time, birdied the first hole and went on to be 3-over par on the front, and 1-over on the back. She clinched the medal with an 8-foot birdie putt at the last hole.

Beckel, a finalist a year ago, slipped back with a bogey at the last hole to be 1-over par for the final 13 holes.

There was a five-for-four playoff at 86 for the final place in the draw, and Jane Curtin of Redgate GC got in at the second extra hole.

Sixteen golfers qualified.
