American Cancer Society chooses board of directors

The Howard County Unit of the American Cancer Society has elected its board of directors for the 1998-1999 year.

Lori Woods will be president; Bill Ceglia, vice president. Rosemary Noblewill be secretary and Lucille Souder will be treasurer.

Elected as new board members were Michele Claycomb, Peter Gobell, Thelma Brown and Neil Dorsey.

Returning to the board for an additional term are Hazel Beckett, Peg Browning, Marilyn Lauffer, Dave Noel, Clara Powell, Dr. Richard Tatum, Dr. Melvin Rapelyea and Nancy Weber.

Alma Lauriente, a longtime volunteer and member of the Society, was elected to serve as a life member.

Agencies and groups receive federal grants to fight crime

Howard County agencies and community organizations that were awarded grants under the U.S. Justice Department Local Law Enforcement Block Grants Program will participate in an awards ceremony and describe how the money will be spent.

The grants, which total $131,653, are to be used to reduce crime and improve public safety.

The awards ceremony for grant recipients will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Long Reach High School atrium, 6101 Old Dobbin Lane, Columbia.

Recipients are Marylanders Against Handgun Abuse, the Howard County Sheriff's Office, the Howard County State's Attorney's Office, the Department of Correction, the Department Police, Long Reach Church of God Summer Youth Program, Howard High School and the "Not My Kid" program.

County Executive Charles I. Ecker, County Council members, police Chief G. Wayne Livesay, District Judge Louis A. Becker, State's Attorney Marna McLendon and other community representatives will be present.
