July 11: The "man who smokes in the omnibus" has arrived in this city, and was seen a few days since riding up Baltimore Street, enjoying his pipe.

July 16: -- Washington, July 15 (AP) -- General of the Armies John J. Pershing who in his 87 years had fought Indians and led American forces to victory in World War I, died today. The country's flags were lowered to half-staff in grateful respect, by presidential order. Death, which had hovered near the ailing old soldier for many months, came quietly in the pre-dawn hours.
