Candlelight Concerts in Columbia has announced next season while closing out this one.

As the final event in its new Jazz Series, it presents ragtime historian (and pianist) William Albright of the University of Michigan and the Last Chance Jazz Band, a Baltimore-area Dixieland band led by Bob Thulman. They'll be playing July 17 at Smith Theater, Howard Community College.

For its coming season, Candlelight offers fine chamber music and classic jazz, with an option to mix and match.

The chamber season leads off with Dutch cellist Anner Bylsma (Oct. 10) and includes the Orfeo Ensemble (Nov. 7); Cuarteto Latinoamericano (Nov. 21); American Quartet with David Jolley on horn (Dec. 5); German violinist Axel Strauss, winner of the Naumberg Competition (Jan. 9); Alexander Quartet (Jan. 23); Lark Quartet with Peter Schickele, a.k.a. P.D.Q. Bach, piano (Feb. 6); Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio (Feb. 20); Emerson String Quartet (March 28); Slovenian pianist Dubravka Tomsic (April 11); and the Vellinger String Quartet from Britain (April 24).

The Alexander Quartet holds some kind of record for responsiveness to its audience. Its repertory includes all 18 Beethoven string quartets, and the audience chooses which it wants to hear.

The jazz lineup: Brooks Tegler Hot Jazz (Oct. 24); Baltimore Jazz Orchestra, directed by Ed Goldstein of the Peabody Ragtime Ensemble (March 6); and New Black Eagle Jazz Band (May 8).

Candlelight also has a full slate of performing arts events for children: "Peter and the Wolf" by the National Marionette Theater (Oct. 25); classic mime by the Stanislavsky Theater Studio of Silver Spring (Nov. 15); " 'Twas the Night Before Christmas" (Dec. 6) and "The Story of Corduroy" (Jan. 31), a French fairy tale, by Theater IV; Peabody Ragtime Ensemble (Jan. 10); and dancers from the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington (Feb. 28). Tickets for all six events are $60.

All events are at the Jim Rouse Theater, Wilde High School, or Smith Theater, Howard Community College, Columbia.

Season tickets for all 14 concerts are $236, seniors $228; for 11 concerts of the buyer's choice, $185 or $172 for seniors; for seven concerts, buyer's choice, $118 or $109 for seniors.
