REV. DR. William F. R. Gilroy, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church, on West Maple Road in Linthicum, has received the Distinguished Alumni award, the highest honor Boys' Latin School of Maryland can bestow on a graduate.

Gilroy, a member of the class of 1965, was chosen because of his professional accomplishments, service to society and the school, school officials said. He also exemplifies what it is "to be rather than to seem," which is the school motto.

For more than 20 years, Gilroy was the unofficial chaplain at Boys' Latin and until 1997 served on the selection committee.

Gilroy was ordained a Lutheran minister in 1973 and served at St. Mark's in Hagerstown, and became pastor of Calvary Lutheran in Woodbine in 1976. He was commissioned as an officer in the Navy Chaplain Corps in 1980 and today holds the rank of commander. He is executive officer of a unit of chaplains assigned to to the Coast Guard and has received a Navy Commendation Medal for his ministry to the wounded returning from Desert Storm.

Gilroy has been pastor of St. John, one of the largest congregations in the Delaware-Maryland Synod, since 1984.

He is the author of two historical monographs published by the Navy for distribution to Navy chaplains and served as counselor for the Suburban Pastoral Counseling Clinic in Catonsville. He has been on the board of directors of Lutheran Social Services and Arundel Hospice.

Gilroy and his wife, Nancy, have two sons, Bill and Brad, who also graduated from Boys' Latin.
