Rockets' red glare to rise over Pasadena for Fourth

WHAT'S THE Fourth of July without fireworks? Just another backyard picnic with a few more friends and family thrown in. But this year, that will change for folks in the Pasadena area.

For the first time since 1992, the skies over Downs Park will be alive with pyrotechnic displays celebrating our nation's birthday, starting at 9: 15 p.m. tomorrow.

The fireworks hoopla will last about 30 minutes, but in preparation for the event, the park will be closed to visitors until 6 p.m.

If you want to see the fireworks, park at the Chesapeake schools complex and take the free shuttle bus to the park. Don't even think about trying to park on the street in one of the communities closer to the park because police won't allow you to drive east of Ventnor Road on Mountain Road unless you can prove you live there.

In fact, they won't let you walk into the park.

The shuttle buses, which will start running at 6 p.m., will load and unload at Bodkin Elementary School on Ventnor Road. Once the parking lots are full, they will cut off service to the park.

Service will start again after the fireworks.

Visitors are reminded not to bring pets, alcoholic beverages, fireworks or sparklers with them. Swimming will not be allowed.

Snacks and cold beverages will be on sale at the park concession stand.

The rain date is 9: 15 p.m. Sunday, but no shuttle bus service will be available. Parking will be available inside the park on a first-come, first-served basis.

Photography contest

Don't forget to take your camera to the fireworks display. All those bombs bursting in air might provide the winning snapshot in the county Department of Recreation and Parks photography contest.

The contest is open to amateurs taking pictures in one of nine county parks. The deadline for entries is July 20.

Contest brochures with rules and entry details are available at the B&A Trail ranger station or Downs Park, or by sending a

stamped, self-addressed envelope to Photo Contest Rules, P.O. Box 1007, Severna Park 21146, or 8311 John Downs Loop, Pasadena 21122.
