Big bang in Chestertown

Chestertown, on the Eastern Shore, is celebrating our nation's birthday with a bang, a 190-pound bang! During their Fourth of July fireworks celebration, a 24-inch shell, the only one of its size in the country, costing $9,000, which was donated by the community, will be launched. More than half of Chestertown's show is made possible by donations from citizens and

The show will take place Saturday at dusk. The fireworks will be launched from the lagoon on John Hanson Road at the edge of town. Viewers may see the exhibition from anywhere in Chestertown, but no one is permitted near the lagoon. The show will run a half hour to 45 minutes.

Donations for the event can be sent to 118 North Cross St., Chestertown, Md., 21620. Mark the envelope "for fireworks." Call 410-778-0500 for information.
