Kids' Stuff

Children can discover the lighter side of opera, the magic of puppetry and the fun of drumming at events today and Tuesday at NationsBank Plaza. Today, the Kinder Opera Theatre presents "It's Reigning Cats and Dogs," a puppet show that introduces young minds and ears to the music of Mozart, Rossini, Puccini and Verdi, through a delightful exploration of opera. Tuesday, drummer Joseph Ngwa of Cameroon introduces children to the many drums of Africa, explains their cultural importance and gives children the opportunity to play the instruments. After Ngwa's performance, children can compete in the Oscar Mayer Wiener Talent Search, a contest for children ages 3 to 10 that awards the winner an appearance in the company's new commercial and a $20,000 college scholarship.

Events take place at NationsBank Plaza, 34 Market Place. The Kinder Opera Theatre performs at 10: 30 a.m. today. Joseph Ngwa performs Tuesday at 10: 30 a.m. The Oscar Mayer Wiener Talent Search takes place Tuesday just after the drumming performance. All are free events. Call 410-837-4636 or 800-OSCAR-KID.

Flumpa

The adventuresome tree frog performs an interactive song-and-dance routine for children throughout July and August area malls, centers and stores. The 6-foot-tall rain forest tree frog and his human pals aim to teach children ages 3 to 9 the importance of caring for the environment and respecting animals and their habitats. Through catchy tunes and fun facts, Flumpa and Friends make learning fun while keeping kids entertained. Flumpa creator Wendy Whitten, who hails from Burtonsville, developed the Flumpa character as a child to entertain her younger brother.

Performances are tonight at 6 o'clock at Dorsey's Search Village Center, 4725 Dorsey Hall Road, Ellicott City, and tomorrow at 11: 30 a.m. at Wilde Lake Village Center, 10451 Twin Rivers Road, Columbia.
