Former Avanti owner found guilty on charges of failing to pay tax

July 01, 1998

An Anne Arundel County Circuit Court jury convicted former Laurel restaurant owner Nicholas V. Sambuco on Friday of two counts of failure to pay withheld state income tax.

Sambuco, 31, of Ellicott City, the former owner of Avanti restaurant on U.S. 1, withheld $39,000 from employees' paychecks between 1993 and 1995, but paid the state about $13,000, said Maryland Attorney General J. Joseph Curran Jr. Lesser charges were dropped.

Judge Michael E. Loney plans to sentence Sambuco on Aug. 10. A conviction is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
