Four advance in Senior qualifier Virginians Lehnhard, Oakley make the cut

Bruce Lehnhard, a former Middle Atlantic PGA player of the year from Fairfax, Va., returned a 1-under-par 70, and David Oakley, who grew up in Northern Virginia, birdied the first extra hole to survive a four-for-two playoff in the regular PGA Senior Tour's Monday qualifier, held at Turf Valley Country Club yesterday.

From a field of 58, playing the North Course, the other qualifiers for the 54-hole State Farm Senior Classic, beginning Friday at Hobbit's Glen in Columbia, were David Ojala, 68, and Tom DeRosa, who had 71 and birdied the first playoff hole. Tony Perla and Dan Wood became the first and second alternates.

Ojala, 53, from Kingwood, Texas, got in two practice rounds over the weekend, then had a bogey-free tour of the 6,500-yard layout.

The best of his three birdies was at the 482-yard 10th, where he hit a 3-wood second shot into the rough just off the fairway, a 5-iron shot to 18 feet, and needed one putt.

Lehnhard and DeRosa hit 17 greens, but were unable to convert much of that advantage, as each used 36 putts. However, Lehnhard made the putt he needed to escape the playoff when he eagled the closing, 475-yard hole.

DeRosa made up for his trouble on the greens in the playoff, holing his birdie putt from 15 feet. Oakley bogeyed the 18th hole to fall back into the playoff, then "killed a sand wedge" from 106 yards at the 560-yard first hole, the ball stopping three feet from the cup to set up his birdie.
