RANDALLSTOWN — The nonprofit South Baltimore Learning Center, which helps area residents learn to read, has been awarded $1,240 in adult and family literacy material by Laubach Literacy International's National Book Scholarship Fund.

An Americorps VISTA volunteer at the center on East Ostend Street wrote the proposal to Laubach to obtain materials for Project PARTNER (Parents as Readers to New Readers), which focuses on teaching and encouraging parents in General Educational Development classes and tutoring to begin reading at home -- with and around their children.

The center -- in its first foray into family literacy -- is incorporating a group to help parents learn to read to their children and encourage involvement in their children's academic lives. Information: 410-625-4215.

RANDALLSTOWN -- Registration for the "Just Say Yes to Reading Club" -- a program in which volunteers and families read together -- will be held at 6: 30 p.m. Thursday at the Randallstown Library, 8604 Liberty Road.

The club is sponsored by the county's Mu Xi Zeta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta, an African-American service sorority.

Meeting on Thursdays from 6: 30 p.m. to 7: 30 p.m. through Aug. 6, sorority sisters and volunteers will break into circles with children and parents and practice reading -- by reading to each other. The program is designed for children up to 13 years of age. Information: 410-887-0770.
