Capuano brings 'Polish' to Belmont Team Valor's filly faces tough Mother Goose field

This was the trip Gary Capuano was supposed to make a year ago with a Team Valor horse: Captain Bodgit to the Belmont Stakes.

But the late-running Captain Bodgit, second in the Kentucky Derby and third in the Preakness, injured a tendon before the Belmont and was retired. Based at the Bowie Training Center, Capuano hasn't saddled a Team Valor horse since -- until today, when he makes a rare trip to Belmont Park with the filly Really Polish.

Team Valor, the California-based racing syndicate, bought Really Polish, a Texas-bred daughter of Polish Numbers, for Capuano to train partly as a reward for his excellent work with Captain Bodgit.

Today, in the highly competitive Mother Goose Stakes, a Grade I, $200,000 race of 1 1/8 miles for 3-year-old fillies, Really Polish meets the likes of Keeper Hill, winner of the Kentucky Oaks; Countess Diana, last year's 2-year-old filly champion; Added Gold, winner of the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes; Jersey Girl, winner of five straight, and Who Did It and Run, winner of three straight over the males, including the Jersey Derby.

Really Polish has won four of nine, including the Grade III Dogwood Stakes in her last start, May 23 at Churchill Downs. Capuano began training her after that.

"She's trained real good. She's done everything I wanted her to do," Capuano said. "But she'll have to run her best race, actually better than her best race, to win. This is about as tough as it's going to get."
