Meet the pro

June 25, 1998

Name: Mike Welsh

Club: Towson Golf & CC (Eagle's Nest)

Age: 46

Born: Pittsburgh

Years a professional: 25

Years at present club: 15

Career highlights: Played in two Anheuser-Busch Classics while a pro in Richmond. More recently, his highlights are the same as those of many club pros: Serving golf-shop customers and enjoying their successes. Finding a way to say yes is key.

Tip: To achieve proper alignment, visualize a pair of railroad tracks. For right-handers, the right track is aimed at the intended target; the tips of shoes and shoulders will be on the left track. This puts the body parallel, left of the target. With the swing, the club will go down the right track (target line), while the body's first move will be with the left hip and the ensuing rotation and follow-through will be down the left track. For lefties, things work the same using the opposite tracks and hip.
