1996 Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon...

Wine of the week

June 24, 1998|By Michael Dresser

1996 Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon, South Australia ($13).

This is the kind of wine you can imagine yourself drinking in its native land, while eating lamb grilled on a spit. A blend of Bordeaux and Rhone varietals, it's a big, earthy, flavorful red wine packed with flavors of chocolate and blackberry and a little dust of the outback. While you can enjoy this wine this evening, it appears to have the potential to improve with five to 10 years of cellar time. Penfolds is the producer of Grange, Australia's greatest wine, and this is a worthy junior member of its product line.
