Thieves targeting unlocked vehicles on southwestern side of Westminster

June 21, 1998|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

Unlocked vehicles from Furnace Hills to Wakefield Valley are being targeted by thieves who are stealing cars and electronic equipment -- cellular phones, compact discs and disc players -- police said.

Westminster police received about 25 complaints last week. Two people reported their cars stolen. Other residents -- several of them on Spalding Court and South Hills Court -- told police that property was taken from their unlocked cars late Tuesday or early Wednesday, said Lt. Dean Brewer, spokesman for city police.

The two stolen vehicles, a Honda Accord and a Geo Metro, were recovered by police within hours. The Accord sustained minor damage to its front fender and undercarriage.

Money also was reported stolen. In several cases, the cars' glove compartments were damaged. Damage estimates ranged from $7 to $650, police said.

Brewer said that the thefts appear to be related, and that at least four people are involved.

Anyone with information about the thefts may call the Westminster police at 410 848-4646.
