Hot corner NATIONAL LEAGUE

June 20, 1998

Quote: "The fact is I'd just as soon get beat that way, and get the bullpen some work, as I would 1-0 or 2-1. Those hurt a lot worse. It just got out of hand and we couldn't control it." -- Braves manager Bobby Cox after 14-1 loss.

It's a fact: Mark McGwire's 33 home runs would have led the Cardinals in all but nine of their 106 years in the National League.

Who's hot: The Cardinals' Delino DeShields has a 17-game hitting streak.

Who's not: The Cubs' Jose Hernandez committed an error at third base, then moved to shortstop and made two there. His third error, in the 12th, led to the go-ahead run.

On deck: Kerry Wood, who celebrated his birthday Tuesday, makes his first start as a 21-year-old today in Philadelphia. The Cubs rookie has 107 strikeouts in 12 starts, while his counterpart, Matt Beech, has 68, but is coming off career-high nine strikeout performance.
