Bartlett presses for opening of post office

June 17, 1998

It might take an act of Congress to open the Westminster post office, or at least an inquiry from Rep. Roscoe G. Bartlett.

The Western Maryland Republican wrote to Postmaster General William J. Henderson yesterday urging him to open the newly built post office in Englar Road Business Center. Construction was completed in the fall.

"There is considerable concern in Carroll County over the continued delay in opening" the U.S. Postal Service facility, Bartlett wrote. The building "appears to be ready to serve the public, but it remains closed and inoperative -- much to the public's dismay."

Bartlett also asked for the construction schedule on a post office in South Carroll. The Postal Service is soliciting bids for that project, to be located on Route 32 at Progress Way.

"The congressman has raised awareness of this issue at many different levels in the Postal Service," said Lisa Wright, Bartlett's spokeswoman. "We are seeking a date certain on the Westminster post office to put pressure on meeting that date."
