Townley shoots 76 at Pine Ridge to capture Municipal publinx title

June 15, 1998|By John W. Stewart | John W. Stewart,SUN STAFF

James Townley, a Clifton Park Golf Course regular who had started the day tied for the lead, held it together enough at the longer, tougher Pine Ridge Golf Course to win the annual spring publinx title of the Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation yesterday.

Townley, a retiree who works part time for the corporation, added a 76 to his opening round of 67 at Clifton to earn the victory with a total of 143.

Jason Raivel followed at 70-75145, trailed by Bob Lentz, 74-72146, and Louis Wright, 71-75146. The par-matching 72 by Lentz was the low round of the day.

Two others who had handled Clifton in sub-par figures, Alvin Medlin and Craig Miskill, could not muster the same success at the Baltimore County layout and slipped back. Medlin, who had shared the first-round lead with 67, shot 80, and Miskill shot 69-82.

Both courses are in excellent condition, but Townley wound up going for the middle of the greens and said it was a struggle trying to get close to some of the pin placements.

Greg Smith, a Towson University sports management professor

headed to Cheyney University as athletic director, went overtime to beat one of his students, Art Nilsen, for the first flight championship. Smith forged a tie with a 12-foot birdie putt at the 18th green, then rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt for the win.
