DeMatha leads tennis event, but final day will be tough Stags stand 4-0, but three other teams close at 3-1

After a wild second day at the National Prep School Team Tennis Championships at McDonogh, the only thing certain is that nothing is certain.

DeMatha emerged as the leader with a 4-0 record after shutting out both St. John's at Prospect Hall and Western Reserve Academy (Ohio). The Stags are one game ahead of Deerfield (Mass.), McDonogh and the Dwight School (N.Y.), but must play each of the latter two schools today on the final day of competition.

The tournament is DeMatha's to lose, but the Stags have a tough road. They could clinch the championship with wins over McDonogh (3-1) this morning and Dwight (3-1) in the afternoon. The Stags defeated Deerfield (3-1) on the first day of competition.

However, if the Stags lose, it throws everything up in the air. It's likely a tiebreaker will have to determine the champion as more than one team would probably finish 5-1 under that scenario.

Deerfield, the tournament champion in 1996, pulled into the second-place tie with a victory over McDonogh yesterday afternoon. The host Eagles had outlasted Dwight, 4-3, in the morning match, but it took four hours and wore them out. Deerfield then handed them a 4-2 defeat in the afternoon match.

"They were physically and emotionally drained," said McDonogh coach Laddie Levy. "We lost two matches during the season because we failed to win three-set matches. We won them all against Dwight. That's unbelievable, but it kills you."

In the win over Dwight, McDonogh got singles victories from Chris Chiu, Zach Myers, David Katz (Nos. 1-3) and a big decision from August Ongkasuwan at No. 5. Chiu, Katz and Ongkasuwan all scored tough three-set wins.

Dwight rebounded and later blanked Augusta Prep.

Chiu and Myers both won against Deerfield, but the Massachusetts school got victories at Nos. 3-5 from Al Acquavella, Peter Carter, Jason Lam and took the doubles point.

Scores: McDonogh 4, Dwight 3; Deerfield 4, McDonogh 2; Dwight 4, Augusta 0; Deerfield 4, Augusta 0; DeMatha 4, Western Reserve 0; DeMatha 4, St. John's at Prospect Hall 0; Western Reserve 4, St. John's at Prospect Hall 0.

Standings: DeMatha 4-0; McDonogh 3-1; Deerfield 3-1; Dwight 3-1; Western Reserve 1-3; St. John's at Prospect Hall 0-4; Augusta 0-4.
