Bicycle tour to raise funds for American Lung Association

June 09, 1998

Odenton resident Lynn Owen is planning a bicycle tour of the United States this summer to raise money for the American Lung Association.

She will join more than 1,000 riders, including 29 from Maryland, from Monday to Aug. 1 in the GTE Big Ride Across America. Participants will bicycle 3,000 miles from Seattle, Wash., to Washington, D.C.

Owen, a recruiter for the Navy, says she is doing what she expects from her recruits -- meeting challenges head-on. The Navy is giving her the time off to make the trip in exchange for her promise to contact recruits along the way and to help local recruiters at some stops.

The mother of two young children has been bicycling the 26-mile round trip to work and an additional 50 to 60 miles on weekends to get in shape for the journey.

Her husband will care for the children while she is away.

Owen is no stranger to long-distance bicycling. She once rode from Anchorage, Alaska, to Long Beach, Calif., for a mental health association, and has participated in several triathlons and runs to benefit charities.

"Cycling or running for a cause brings more meaning to the activity," Owen says. "I have seen a lot of this world through my naval travels and have to appreciate what the United States has to offer. My goal is to give something back to the community."
