Top athletes will receive awards today at luncheon

June 08, 1998

There will be 105 students honored at today's 32nd High School Athlete of the Year Award Luncheon sponsored by The Sun, two of whom will be chosen as the newspaper's Male and Female Athletes of the Year.

The event will begin at 11: 30 a.m. at Martin's West. It will honor athletes selected during the 1997-98 school year by their parents, coaches and athletic peers.

Last year's principal award winners were Alisha McClinton, a track and field and basketball star from Perry Hall, who went on to Georgia Tech, and Wilde Lake's Tony Jackson, an All-Metro football and baseball player who went on to play football at Maryland.

McClinton emerged as Georgia Tech's top freshman finisher in the long jump and 60-meter dash in February's Atlantic Coast Conference indoor track championships.

She finished third in the long jump at 19 feet, 7 inches and was fifth in the 60 meters in 7.51 seconds.

Jackson started as a first-year freshman for the Terps' football team.
