Helpful publications Of Consuming Interest

Scholastic publications has a wealth of free and moderately priced material to share with parents, children and teachers.

The Web site - www.scholastic.com - contains the Scholastic Co. resource guides, tips and book lists as well as useful activities in the areas of reading, spelling and writing, which can be downloaded. In addition, the site provides strategies for children on how to become better readers, and suggestions for reading aloud to your child.

And there are two helpful paperbacks from Scholastic.

* "What You Need To Know When Your Child Is Learning to Read" by Sara Wilford (1997, $6.95) is an informative book with helpful tips and resources for parents who want to help their children get the best start possible on reading. It offers explanations of how children learn to read and helps parents recognize their child's learning style.

* "Read to Me: Raising Kids Who Love to Read," by Bernice Cullinan (1992, $4.50) explains the rationale behind reading aloud to your child, suggests tips for busy parents and offers an annotated list of sure-fire read-aloud hits for preschoolers to preteens.
