Joan Winchester established Women's Golf Association standards of excellence and durability yesterday, setting Women's Metropolitan tournament records that perhaps only she will be able to better.

Winchester, playing her home course of Rolling Road Golf Club, defeated Andrea Kraus, 3 and 2, in the 66th annual championship.

In capturing this title for the third time, Winchester, 60, became its oldest winner and set marks for the number of years between titles (29) and number of years her titles have spanned (31). "I was thrilled to be medalist, but to win -- it's really exciting. It's a goal I set for myself several years ago," she said.

Winchester took command when she won four holes in a five-hole stretch. The run began with a curling 18-foot birdie putt at No. 9.

Kraus birdied No. 15 to be two-down with three to go, but Winchester won the climactic hole with a par.
