County's largest strawberry festival to be held Saturday

Carroll County's largest strawberry festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Sykesville-Freedom District fire carnival grounds. The event is sponsored by Messiah Lutheran Church of Berrett.

The annual event features a large craft and flea market, breakfast and lunch, pony rides, children's activities, entertainment and strawberries, shortcake and ice cream.

The featured strawberry specialty is the Works -- homemade hot milk shortcake, Hoffman's ice cream, strawberries and whipped cream.

The entertainment schedule is: Northern Lights Band at 9 a.m., Magic Bob at 9: 30 a.m., Carroll County Dance Studio at 10 a.m., International Karate Academy of Eldersburg at 10: 30 a.m. and noon, Freedom Firestar Majorettes at 11 a.m. and the Starvation Army Band at 11: 30 a.m.

In the afternoon, a Safari Party with a live animals jungle theme will be held at 12: 30 p.m., Talent Express performs at 1 p.m., Perna Gymnastics at 1: 30 p.m., No Doubt Dance Twirl Team at 2 p.m., "Detour" Dave Sandler of radio stations WIYY-FM (98 Rock) and WBAL-AM (1090) at 2: 30 p.m., Dance Troupe 5678 from the Carroll County School for the Performing Arts at 3 p.m., and the Elktones from Elkridge at 3: 30 p.m.

Gamber: Firefighters from Reese assisted Gamber at 2: 23 p.m. Tuesday, responding to a front-end-loader fire in the 1900 block of Polaris Road. Units were out 50 minutes.

Sykesville: Firefighters responded at 4: 32 p.m. Tuesday to a fire alarm in the 1800 block of McDuff Court. Units were out two minutes.
