Mariners update

The underachieving Orioles and Mariners are both 22-27 after wins yesterday. Both have struggled mightily with bullpen woes. The Seattle losing streak had reached six games Saturday when closer Bobby Ayala allowed a four-run ninth inning to Tampa Bay. The Mariners have converted only nine of 20 save chances. Before Randy Johnson's route-going win yesterday, the Mariners had been 10 1/2 games out of first place for the first time since Aug. 25, 1995. On a 4-8 slide, the Mariners were pounded at home by the Orioles last season, losing six of seven. The Mariners have scored 125 of their 267 runs (47 percent) on home runs. The big-league average is 33 percent. Ken Griffey and Alex Rodriguez are the majors' most productive power tandem, combining for 36 homers and 80 RBIs.
