Ruthie and the Wranglers will open concert series

THIS WEEKEND signals the unofficial beginning of summer and the official start of another season of Sunday evening concerts at Downs Park.

As in the past, this year's lineup of performers will appeal to a variety of musical tastes and cultures, including country, chamber, Caribbean and German.

Ruthie and the Wranglers will bring their honky-tonk, country swing sound to the Bayside amphitheater at 6 p.m. Sunday. Lawn seating is available, so bring a blanket or chairs.

Admission to the Bayside Concert Series is free. Admission to the park is $4 per car.

Auction for teen trip

Magothy United Methodist Church is auctioning boats, Beanie Babies, baseball tickets and other items May 29 at the church, 3703 Mountain Road, to help finance a teen mission trip to West Africa this summer.

Justin Clulow and Jeremiah Wentz, 16-year-old members of the congregation, will join "teens from all across the nation on an evangelistic mission trip," said Paula Wentz, Jeremiah's mother.

"They will be spending two months in Ghana with Teen Mania Ministries performing a drama depicting the life of Christ, and then talking one-on-one with the local people about their faith," .. she said.

Some of the items to be auctioned include a 12-foot sailboat, rare Beanie Babies Erin and Doodle, musical saws, one-week vacations to Ocean City or the Killington ski resort and a guided whitewater rafting trip in West Virginia.

A silent auction will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a live auction at 8 p.m. Admission is $3 and includes refreshments and chances for door prizes.

Alfinito to speak

The Pasadena Business Association will meet at noon June 3 at the Wooden Nickel Restaurant.

Mike Alfinito, director of Corporate Communications for the Middle River Racing Association, will speak.

The cost for members is $10 with reservations, $15 at the door. Reservations are due by May 29.
