U.S. Open qualifying

May 19, 1998|By John W. Stewart

Amateurs Miguel Rivera and Aaron Wright were among those advancing, as local qualifying for the U.S. Open was held at two area sites yesterday.

Five players from 58 starters at Eagle's Nest, and three from 38 players at Hillendale Country Club now will move along to 36-hole sectional qualifying rounds, one of which is scheduled for June 8 at Woodmont CC in Rockville.

Rivera got in with a birdie at the first extra hole at Hillendale, and William Curtis, a first-year assistant pro at Caves Valley GC, with a 10-foot birdie putt at the third. He had parred the first two holes, staying alive at the second when he got up-and-down from a right bunker, holing a downhill 10-foot putt, one he called "the best putt I ever hit."

At Eagle's Nest, where five got in without a playoff, Wright, a Naval Academy senior, had a 1-under par 71, despite a double-bogey at the 18th hole.
