Taste of the Nation fund-raiser to benefit hunger-relief groups

TICKETS ARE available for the third annual Taste of the Nation in Annapolis, scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9: 30 p.m. tomorrow at City Dock.

Sixty-five local chefs and caterers will provide food for the fund-raiser. Tickets cost $40 in advance and $50 at the event. Food and beverages are included.

The Annapolis festival is part of a nationwide event sponsored by American Express Co. and Share Our Strength, a nonprofit, hunger-relief organization.

Organizers hope to raise $35,000. Seventy percent of the proceeds will go to Food Link, a volunteer-run county organization that delivers perishable food to those who need it. Another 10 percent will go to the Maryland Food Bank, and the remainder will be distributed to national and international hunger-relief agencies.

Student greenhouse

Southern High School has opened the doors of its Bull Dawg Greenhouse for the spring season.

Students operate the greenhouse, and proceeds go toward a scholarship for one graduating senior.

The students are selling a variety of outdoor plants, including petunias, begonias and marigolds.

The greenhouse is open from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays. It will operate until the stock is sold.

Library volunteers needed

Branches of the Annapolis public library need student volunteers for the summer.

Library officials are looking for students ages 12 to 14 to help with the annual summer reading program. The program runs from June 15 to July 31.

The volunteers will have a variety of duties, including registering children for the program, restocking bookshelves and helping with craft projects.

Republican events

The Republican Women of Anne Arundel County has set its spring agenda.

The club will have a general membership meeting at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Conte Building at 116 Defense Highway. Information: 410-263-2125.

A dinner meeting at the Wyndham Hotel in Parole is scheduled June 3. Syndicated political cartoonist Rick Kollinger will be the speaker for the event, which begins at 6: 30 p.m. Kollinger is a native of Maryland's Eastern Shore and lives in Easton. Information: 410-268-1698.

The group plans to attend the state Republican convention, which will be June 5 and 6 at the BWI Sheraton. There will be a hospitality suite June 5 and a luncheon June 6 that will feature former Republican presidential candidate Steve Forbes as speaker. Information: 410-263-2125.
