Giants: Only Boston's Dennis Eckersley (43) and Atlanta's Dennis Martinez (42 1/2 ) are older and have more major-league service time than Danny Darwin.

Cubs: Kevin Tapani recorded his 1,000th career strikeout, getting Jeff Kent in the first. The loss ended his four-game winning streak. Sammy Sosa was 0-for-3 with a walk, ending his career-high hitting streak at 14.

Phillies: Yesterday's postponement because of rain cost right-hander Ryan Nye a start. The 24-year-old was relegated to the bullpen and manager Terry Francona tabbed Mike Grace to start today's series finale. Grace has lost three straight decisions and has a 6.23 ERA in his last four starts.
