Salisbury gains Div. III semi on late burst

Scott Walstrum scored five goals and Chris Turner had three in leading Salisbury State to a 16-11 win yesterday over Gettysburg in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III tournament at Salisbury.

The Sea Gulls broke a 10-10 tie by outscoring the Bullets, 6-1, over the final 16:13. Turner started the run with an unassisted goal with 1:13 left in the third period. Walstrum then scored his fourth goal with 13 seconds left to extend Salisbury's lead to 12-10.

Salisbury led by 9-6 early in the third period but Gettysburg (11-5) tied it with three straight goals, including two by Ross Garretson.

The Sea Gulls advanced to the national semifinals for the seventh time in 10 years and will host Washington College.

* Washington College 13, Hampden-Sydney 9: Andy Lopatin collected four goals and Justin McCarthy had two goals and four assists as the visiting Shoremen won a Division III quarterfinal. Washington College overcame losing 22 of 26 faceoffs and having eight fewer ground balls (56-48).

* Colgate 12, Mount St. Mary's 9: The Red Raiders (8-5) broke a 9-9 fourth-quarter tie with three straight goals to defeat the Mountaineers (7-1) in an East Coast Athletic Conference tournament semifinal in Hamilton, N.Y.

Nick DeFelice and Bryan Cole led the Mount with two goals each.
