Mother charged in the death of 18-month-old girl

Hours after her boyfriend was arrested, the mother of an 18-month-old West Baltimore girl was taken into custody by city police and charged with assault and abuse of her daughter who was found dead Tuesday.

Police said Vonestine Covel, 31, of the 600 block of W. Lafayette Ave. was arrested late Wednesday.

Her boyfriend, Shannon Flint, 32, of the 2600 block of Francis St. was arrested in the afternoon on the same charges. Each was being held at the Central Booking and Intake Center in lieu of $75,000 bail.

Police were awaiting a state medical examiner's report on the cause of Jasmine Covel's death, but noted a preliminary finding that her arms had been broken,
