Putting the bite on marine animals

Kids will love the new Barnum's Animals Marine Collection from Nabisco, a "limited edition" of animal crackers in stores only till the end of August. The shapes are the best yet, including a wonderful crab. Adults will like the fact that 5 cents from every sale will go to protect endangered species.

'Joy of Cooking' and fond memories

My vote for Cookbook of the Year is the just-published facsimile of the first edition of Irma Rombauer's "The Joy of Cooking" (Scribner, $25). This is the cookbook I used as a child, and I haven't seen it in years. Of course, when my grandmother bought the original in 1931, it cost $3.

Meals on Wheels extravaganza

Area restaurant chefs will be cooking for the Meals on Wheels Sixth Annual Culinary Extravaganza 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. next Tuesday at Harbor Court Hotel. Proceeds will help the organization provide nutritious meals for the homebound elderly. Call 410-558-0932 for more information.

Juice is brimming with goodness

I haven't tried all the fresh-squeezed orange juices at area food stores, but I've tried a lot of them. And none comes close to matching Fresh Fields' organic fresh-squeezed juice for taste and -- just as important -- consistent quality. At $3.29 a quart, the price is competitive as well.
