Frances Nicols, 99, founded St. Mary's alumni group

Frances E. Nicols, a founder of the St. Mary's College of Maryland alumni association, died Friday of respiratory failure at Sandy Spring Friends Nursing Home in Sandy Spring. She was '' 99.

A native of Columbus, Ohio, she was raised in Baltimore and graduated from Friends School in 1917. She attended what was then St. Mary's Female Seminary in St. Mary's City and founded the school's alumni group in 1923.

Miss Nicols worked for 46 years for what is now Mercantile Safe Deposit & Trust Co. She retired in 1964 as an administrative assistant in the corporate trust department.

An avid Orioles fan, Miss Nicols lived most of her life on East 33rd Street, a few blocks from Memorial Stadium. In addition to baseball, she enjoyed opera, flowers and discussing politics.

Services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Old St. Paul's Kent Episcopal Church in Chestertown.

She is survived by a nephew, Frank C. Barger of Lakeville, Pa.; two nieces, Kathryn Thompson of Frederick and Deborah B. Hanrahan of Washington; and seven grandnieces and grandnephews.
