The Ryland Group Inc. was one of the 10 largest builders in the country last year in a survey in the April issue of Professional Builder magazine.

The Columbia-based builder was sixth nationally, based on $1.53 billion in housing revenue. In the nation's top 10 new-home markets, Ryland finished fifth in Atlanta, ninth in Chicago and seventh in Orlando, Fla., and Washington. In Baltimore, Ryland is the second largest homebuilder.

The Pulte Corp. of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., defended its ranking as the nation's top builder last year. The second largest builder was Centex Corp. of Dallas. Centex builds homes in Washington, but has not entered the Baltimore market.

The magazine reported that the 400 largest homebuilders accounted for 23.5 percent of the housing market last year, up from 22 percent in 1996, 20.4 percent in 1995 and 18 percent in 1994. Revenue from the top 400 was a record $73.6 billion last year, up 15.2 percent from the previous record of $63.9 billion in 1996.
