MONKTON -- Looking perfectly in step for a run at the $50,000 Maryland Hunt Cup in three weeks, Armata Stable's Welter Weight won his third straight Edward S. Voss Memorial, the feature race at the Elkridge-Harford Point-to-Point yesterday.
Trained by Tom Voss and ridden by Mike Elmore, Welter Weight relaxed until the final two fences of the three-mile race before running down Florida Law. Elmore saved enough to hold off late-running Uncle Uno for the win. Welter Weight, second in the 1997 Hunt Cup, probably will run next in the $30,000 Grand National at Butler April 18.
Voss, who plays host to the races at his Atlanta Hall Farm, won four of the five events.
