Royals update

Kansas City won six of its last seven exhibition games. The Royals were 67-94 last season and finished fifth in the AL Central, 19 games behind the Cleveland Indians. It was the second-worst record in club history. Tony Muser begins his first full season as manager. Kevin Appier normally would be today's starter, but hewas forced on the 60-day disabled list with a tear in his right shoul- der. Jeff Conine, reacquired from the Florida Marlins, went on the 15-day DL with an abdominal strain. Third baseman Dean Palmer batted .358 this spring, with six homers and 16 RBIs. First baseman Jeff King had 17 RBIs. Designated hitter Joe Vitiello had 13 hits in his last 27 spring at-bats, and outfielder Johnny Damon finished on a 9-for-22 tear.
