Vega Sindoa Tempranillo, Navarra ($8)

Tempranillo is not exactly a household word in the United States, but in Spain it's the king of red-wine grapes. This is not an example of tempranillo at its mature best, but it does show what a delightful, reasonably priced wine it can produce in its youth. The Vega Sindoa is a chunky, medium- to full-bodied red wine with little tannin and loads of black-cherry fruit. There's an appealing meaty and earthy quality, and a breezy acidity. It's a most enjoyable value.
