March 23, 1998|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A man was killed yesterday when a gunman fired several times into a crowd of people outside a convenience store in South Baltimore, police said.

Detective Michael Hammel of the homicide unit identified the victim as Shawn Matthews, 23, of the 2400 block of S. Paca St. in Westport, also in the southern part of the city.

Hammel said Matthews and several friends were outside the 7-Eleven store in the 3200 block of Hollins Ferry Road in Lakeland about 5 a.m. when a gunman, standing about 80 yards away in the parking lot of the Taco Bell restaurant across the street in the 2300 block of W. Patapsco Ave., fired several shots into the crowd, hitting Matthews in the chest.

The gunman drove off, Hammel said.

He said there was no evidence the intended target was Matthews, who died about an hour later at Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
