The Maryland Association of Mortgage Brokers (MAMB) honored its first graduating class of 11 mortgage professionals Thursday during the association's annual conference by designating them Senior Mortgage Consultants.

"We are extremely proud of what these mortgage professionals have achieved," said MAMB President Jeffrey Wolpe. "As the mortgage industry becomes more competitive, brokers must find a way to distinguish themselves to the public consumer and to lenders who seek brokerage services."

The 11 who received the designation are: Joel E. Arias, Edgar W. Barton, Diane B. Cook, John L. Councilman, Thomas Frame, John Garofalo, Margie Hofberg, Marian Krampf, Suzi Lawrence, Steven J. Papineau and Moses L. Perry Jr.

To receive the SMC designation, the graduates studied for the past year in the program offered by MAMB, in conjunction with the Educational Foundation of the National Association of Mortgage Brokers.

"MAMB is placing increasing emphasis on education and certification as an essential way to improve the accountability and performance of our members," Wolpe said.

To get into the program, candidates had to accumulate qualifying points based on successful completion of required courses, participation in industry-sponsored training programs, college degrees, professional designations and leadership positions held within NAMB or its affiliated state associations.
