Boat beat: After six days of racing, Toshiba has taken the lead and put past troubles behind. A protest over the use of Toshiba's engine to clear seaweed of her propeller ended in a disqualification from Leg 5. Conflicts between skipper Paul Standbridge and crew resulted in a visit by team's head Dennis Conner to help ease tensions. The Whitbread fleet has had to contend with extreme heat and flying fish along the Brazilian coast. A whole school of fish flew over EF Education.

Weather: Short passage through the doldrums is expected. Main shower area still lurking north of equator and straddling 35W. Area headed slowly west. High pressure system strong and holding halfway between Bermuda and Azores. Tradewinds blowing strong north of 5N.
