BETHESDA -- When informed that he had been dropped to second on the team's depth chart, St. Paul's goalie Alec Schweizer didn't view the move as a personal demotion but rather as a bonus for his team.

"We're a lucky team because we have two great goalies," said Schweizer, referring to himself and starter John Belitsos. "If one of us has an off-day, the other will come in and get the job done."

Schweizer did just that yesterday at Landon School in an early season matchup of two teams expected to be ranked among their areas' top fives this season. He came off the bench in the second quarter and made nine saves to help St. Paul's eke out a 9-8 season-opening victory over the Bears.

"Alec is a gamer and he was really a catalyst for us," said St. Paul's coach Rick Brocato. "He went in there today and made it all happen for us."

Senior attackman Conor Gill led the Crusaders offensively with four goals and an assist and his younger brother, freshman Brendan, had a goal and two assists.

Conor Ford, a sophomore attackman, had two goals and one assist and scored what proved to be the game-winner with 2: 51 left on a breakaway that began when Schweizer delivered a perfect clearing pass to Alex Poole, who was in traffic near midfield.

Landon's Dave Taylor cut the lead to one goal with 1: 42 left. The Bears then had a perfect opportunity to score with just over a minute left but Arthur Rhodes' shot from point-blank range was stabbed by Schweizer.

A late holding penalty gave the Bears' offense one more chance to tie it with 51 seconds left, but Landon never got off a final shot after Poole jarred the ball loose with a vicious stick check.
