Mz. Ann finished second in the $60,000 Politely Stakes at Laurel Park yesterday, but the stretch run was so rough that she was elevated to the winner's spot after the stewards disqualified favored Maragold Princess.

Maragold Princess, ridden by Edgar Prado, had charged through along the rail, making an opening that hadn't existed until the bold move near the eighth pole in the seven-furlong race for Maryland-bred fillies.

The move by Maragold Princess reached the wire with a four-length margin, the Laurel stewards announced an inquiry of the stretch run. Then Larry Reynolds, jockey on Mz. Ann, claimed foul.

The video showed that Maragold Princess had taken an abrupt left turn, aiming at a hole that had suddenly closed.

The stewards then disqualified Maragold Princess and placed her fourth. The new order of finish was Mz. Ann, To Little J D, Song Request, Maragold Princess, Cosmo Topper, Roby and Tell Me Tell Me.

Prado said later that he "definitely had the best filly in the race. I saw a small hole and went through it."

Mz. Ann paid $12.20, $5.40 and $3.60. To Little J D paid $3.80 and $3.40. Song Request paid $8.40 to show.

Maragold Princess' time was 1 minute, 26 1/5 seconds.

Mz. Ann, trailed by Ann Merryman, is owned by Michael Cantaneo.
