(as of 00: 18: 00 GMT)

Boat beat: At 1800 GMT, Chessie Racing took a lead of seven FTC nautical miles past former leader Toshiba. The captains on the nine yachts expected headwinds to force them to tack their way up the coast but, constant breezes prevail. EF Language buried its bow and wiped out starboard side stanchions.

Weather: Low pressure around 31S/37W and a cold front that extends NE toward Montivideo dominant the local weather patterns. These systems bring decent W/NW breezes to the fleet. A low heading SE will have diminishing effects as it weakens later tonight.
