Winfield Elementary pupils raise $12,869 in math-a-thon for hospital

Students at Winfield Elementary School recently participated in a math-a-thon that raised $12,869.38 for the Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore.

The 376 students raised more than any other school in Maryland.

Businesses provided prizes for students, who also received certificates of participation.

Winfield second-grader EJ Kreinar was diagnosed during surgery on Dec. 8 with Burkitt's lymphoma, a rare childhood cancer. He has completed chemotherapy and will continue to be monitored at the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Oncology Center.

Second-grader Eric Rhodes raised $400 and, with six other students, shaved his head to show support for EJ, who lost his hair during chemotherapy.


Winfield: Firefighters from Winfield, Gamber and Westminster responded to a chimney fire in the 2700 block of Salem Bottom Road at 6: 55 p.m. Tuesday. Units were out 38 minutes.
